<TODAY'S SUBJECT>

The Effects of Light on Flowering

Plant growth and development are controlled by interactions between environmental factors and inner developmental processes. Amongst the diverse environmental factors, light plays the most essential role, affecting plants in various ways, from their growth and ability to produce energy to their bloom time. For example, in the absence of sufficient light, plants exhibit a unique growth pattern called etiolation. These plants will produce thinner and longer stems with longer internodes to reach a faint light source or to find one, in a much more rapid way than those exposed to adequate sunlight. A plant suffering from etiolation will also produce fewer leaves.

(B) They receive insufficient levels of energy to initiate photosynthesis.
(C) Their thin, long stems are not strong enough to support the entire plant.
(D) Their leaves lack the ability to convert carbon dioxide into organic compounds.
